Solid Surface FAQs by MONTE Certified Fabricators

How is solid surface made? — and how is it fabricated?

Solid surface is an engineered material made from acrylic or polyester resin blended with aluminum trihydrate, a mineral filler, and pigment. It arrives as sheet stock, most commonly 1/2 inch thick, and it is the same material all the way through rather than a decorative layer bonded to a substrate. That single property is what makes everything else possible. Because the color runs through the full thickness, two sheets can be chemically bonded, machined flat, and sanded through progressive grits until the joint disappears. A twenty-foot run of countertop reads as one continuous piece. Granite and quartz cannot do this — every slab meets at a visible seam filled with color-matched epoxy. The material can also be heated to a working temperature and formed into curves, which is how curved reception fronts, radiused bar edges, and integrated sink bowls are produced. And because it is solid through, scratches, burns and stains sand out and the surface returns to new rather than being replaced. We fabricate every piece in our own North Las Vegas shop. The same people who cut the material seam it and install it.

What solid surface brands do you fabricate?

We are a certified DuPont Corian and Staron fabricator and installer, and we fabricate HI-MACS, Durasein, Avonite, Wilsonart and Formica solid surface. Corian is the original acrylic solid surface, with the broadest color range in the category and the translucent grades used for backlit and illuminated-edge work. Staron offers deep solids and heavy particulate patterns at competitive cost. HI-MACS is widely specified for large-format commercial installations and carries strong certifications for healthcare and food service. Durasein has become a common alternative for high-volume commercial work. Avonite brings pattern and translucent lines the others do not, and Wilsonart and Formica each carry decor ranges that coordinate with their laminate and panel programs. Colors are not interchangeable between brands, so material selection usually comes down to matching a specified color, a required certification, or an existing installation. We will tell you which brand fits the project rather than defaulting to whichever we stock.

Where is solid surface used in homes?

In homes, solid surface goes into kitchen countertops and islands, bathroom vanities, butler's pantries, laundry and mudroom counters, bar tops, window sills, fireplace surrounds and furniture tops. The features people specify most are the ones only this material allows: an undermount bowl bonded directly into the deck with no rim and no caulk line, a backsplash coved up the wall in one continuous curve, and a waterfall island edge that turns the corner without a visible joint.

Why is solid surface used in medical and dental offices?

Solid surface is non-porous. It has no pores for bacteria, mold or fluids to occupy, it never requires sealing, and it stands up to the disinfectants used in clinical settings. That is why it is specified throughout medical and dental construction. We fabricate reception and transaction tops, nurse stations, exam room casework tops, dental operatory counters, sterilization and lab benches, and medication preparation surfaces. The detail that matters most in these rooms is the elimination of joints — an integrated sink bowl removes the seam at the basin, and a coved backsplash removes the seam at the wall, so a counter can be wiped end to end with nothing for contamination to collect behind. Repairability matters here for a second reason. A damaged surface in an operating clinic can be refinished in place over a weekend instead of shutting a room down for demolition and replacement. Completed healthcare and institutional work includes Corian Glacier White surfaces for Desert View Dental and HI-MACS reception casework for UNLV.

Can solid surface be used on shower walls?

Large-format solid surface panels replace tile in showers and tub surrounds. There is no grout, which means nothing to reseal, nothing to discolor, and no grout line for mold to grow in — the most common failure point in a tiled shower. Panels are seamed the same way countertops are, so a three-wall surround can read as continuous material from floor to ceiling. Corners can be coved rather than butted, soap niches and benches can be integrated in matching material, and shower pans and thresholds can be thermoformed to slope correctly, including ADA-compliant roll-in configurations. The same panels work for wainscot, full height wall cladding, elevator interiors and partition systems. For hotels, senior living and multifamily renovations, a solid surface surround installs faster than tile and eliminates the maintenance line item that tile grout creates.
